We Love Kangaroos

Australia's beloved kangaroos are one of the most recognisable icons in the world and have been a central part of Indigenous life in Australia over the last 50,000 years. The kangaroo symbol is proudly used by Australians across the globe. Kangaroos can travel speeds up to 60 Km/hr using a unique hopping style, with females often carrying young joeys in their pouch. They are a keystone species, spreading seeds and enhancing and protecting biodiversity.

The Treatment of Kangaroos

Most people don't know that kangaroos are victims of the largest terrestrial wildlife slaughter in the world. Every night kangaroos are killed in the wild, in their family groups, by government sanctioned commercial shooters. The biggest markets are Europe and America where kangaroo body parts are sold for items like petfood, sausages and soccer boots. The killing of kangaroos is inherently cruel with no effective monitoring. There are no statistics available for the animals who are wounded and escape, only to endure a long and painful death. The abandoned joeys are decapitated or bludgeoned to death.

Kangaroos in the Bushfires

The recent catastrophic bushfires in Australia wiped out more than 3 billion wildlife, with 25% of bushland habitat destroyed in the state of NSW. The world watched on as burnt kangaroos limped out of the flames. Millions of dollars were raised to care for this wildlife yet despite this utter devastation the government allowed the commercial shooting of kangaroos to continue. The number of kangaroos remaining in Australia is unknown
